I recently read an article in Car Craft about the 5.4L 4 Valve Ford Engine. As any Ford enthusiast knows, the 5.4L is the powerplant for many Mustang Cobra-R's, Navigator SUV's, and supercharged Ford muscle. I personally know someone that bought a surplus 5.4L crate engine that was slated to go into a "local" police department's cruiser. It is still in the crate and will soon be transplanted into a Ford F100. Unfortunately, the article recommends not buying the earlier model 2 or 3 valve 5.4L since it "can't breathe". But it would be interesting to see what can be done with the short block and radical aftermarket 2 valve heads. The 5.4L 4 Valve engines are strong candidates for a swap into older Ford muscle. But the challenge lies in the need for engine bay/ front suspension mods as well as the need for a Ford Racing 5.4L Controls Pack for about $2k. Unless you can get the engine at a "junkyard" price, it would almost be better to buy a stroked 351W with aftermarket top end- tons of torque and hp.
Next, I'll blog about junkyard 4.6L Ford motors. These are quite plentiful and have already proven their worth as an entry level hot rodder's engine.
